Eva Mora-Theuer currently works as a paediatric specialist at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Vienna’s General Hospital / Medical University of Vienna. In March 2019 Eva joined the Center for Public Health as doctoral student with a research focus on Child Protection Medicine.
Child maltreatment is a major public health issue with over 55 million children (!) being affected in the WHO European region. Traumatic childhood experiences are associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, chronic disease, delinquency, violent behavior and reduced life-expectancy. Child Protection Medicine aims for early detection and optimal management of these cases to alleviate long-term consequences.
Since the start of Eva Mora-Theuer’s residency she has been involved in the field of Child Protection Medicine and was directly involved in the set-up of the pilot project FOKUS. As a paediatric specialist, she continued her work as child abuse specialist at FOKUS and she is still involved with the Child Protection Team of the Department for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Furthermore, she is a founding member of the research committee of the Austrian Society of Child Protection Medicine (ÖGKiM).
Her education and training in the field of Child Protection Medicine consists of participating in three International Courses on Child Abuse Paediatrics (Inter-CAP), acquiring the German Certification for Child Protection Medicine by the German Society of Child Protection Medicine (DGKiM), participating in European regional and international ISPCAN conferences, taking part in Annual Meetings of the Ray E. Helfer Society and an observership at the Stephanie Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children (Atlanta, USA).
Furthermore, she was awarded with a Scholar Membership of the Ray E. Helfer Society and an Annual Meeting Scholarship (2016) by the Ray E. Helfer Society. In 2019 she was part of the planning committee of Inter-CAP-2019 held in Vienna.
The thesis project of Eva Mora-Theuer will provide an overall assessment of the current status quo of child protection work in Austria including a scientific analysis of FOKUS with the aim to generate recommendations for future developments.
